Primary Research into Vinyl

To gain some initial inspiration for this brief I first looked at my stack of vinyls as primary research.

This is the album art for 'Beard, Wives, Denim' by Pond. The record overall gives me the feeling of a group of songs that were wrote in the mid 70's, only to be recorded & released in 2012 by a fresh-exciting Australian rock act named POND. The use of a Polaroid photograph on the front gives it an alternative look.

^An example of an illustrative album cover, something I might be interesting in creating. I really struggled to find the illustrator of the album art but it is copyright is believed to belong to the label, United Artists Records Below is album art for the same band, War, but I do not think it is as successful.

The band Funkadelic always have awesome album art. I love how the face has been repeated into a shape.

Easily one of my favourite arctic monkeys vinyl cover, the cover art for Crying Lightning by the artist Arctic Monkeys. I love how the image of the nude women is mirrowed, looks awesome and cool. The cover art copyright is believed to belong to the label, Domino Records, or the graphic artist(s). Below I love how the designer has considered the actual vinyl, by using the silhouette of the band members profile.

Easy Star All-Stars, album the Dubber Side of the Moon... I simply love the style of the typography it reflects the music.

Above and below are another two album covers, for the band Funkadelic. Below, I like how the unfolds to show the whole body of the nude women.

More awesome album art by Sonic Bloom, the album artist is Night Bloom.

I thought I would put this in as an example of album art from the 60s (1968) This is one of my most precious vinyls, its an original from the 60s. I love the type of 'Tamala Motown' which is rarely seen these days.

Quadrophenia

Quadrophenia is the sixth studio album by English rock band The Who. Released on 19 October 1973 by Track and Polydor in the United Kingdom, and Track andMCA in the United States, it is a double album, and the group's second rock opera.  I love how the album and the album art (photography) tells a story involving  social, musical and psychological happenings from an English teenage perspective, set in London and Brighton in 1965.

photographs from the inside booklet to tell the story
The photographers, the front cover photography and design were by Graham Hughes from an idea by Roger Daltrey. Booklet and back cover photography were by Ethan A. Russell.
From looking into my vinyl sleeves so far, I've noticed a lot of photography has been used, which is something I might consider doing!

I did visit some vinyl stores in and around Leeds. Heres a photograph I took in Jumbo records.
